Stanford vs. Notre Dame. :59 seconds left in a 38-38 contest. The Cardinal has a 1st and goal. Notre Dame has one timeout left. Unfortunately for Stanford, their coach is Jim Harbaugh, not MJD. Why not down the ball a few times, let the clock run and hit an extra point length game-winning field goal? Because Toby Gerhart needed some more Heisman juice. Harbaugh called an off-tackle run, and the Fighting Irish predictably allowed Toby Gerhart to walk in. Untouched.
Notre Dame eventually lost, but only after they reached Stanford’s 20. After the game, Jim Harbaugh deferred his Lisa Salter interview to Toby Gerhart saying just “This is the man. This is the man.”
Oh, I just realized why I don’t care about college football. It’s because trying to win a bronze doll of some dead dude is more important than earning a victory. Dumb move by a smart school.
