A DARE-DEVIL who was base jumping off a Melbourne bridge early this morning is lucky to be alive after crash landing.
Paramedics were called to the EJ Whitten Bridge, which crosses the Maribyrnong River, shortly before 7am after a man’s parachute stalled close to the ground and he fell into bush next to the river.
Paramedics at the scene said the man, believed to be in his late 20s, may have misjudged the 60m drop from the Western Ring road, and he was taken to the Sunshine Hospital suffering foot and ankle injuries.
Paramedics said the man told them he was an experienced base jumper and said “he knew what he was doing’’.
A friend of the jumper who was at the scene but did not wish to be named shrugged off the extreme act.
“It was just a hard landing,’’ he said.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Ray Rowe said the Melbourne extreme sportsman was in a stable condition after being taken to hospital, but his injuries could have been much worse.
“He landed very heavily, he’s lucky to have survived,” Mr Rowe said.
Base jumping is an extreme sport where people jump off fixed objects with a parachute. Base-jumpers who take off from bridges in Victoria could be charged with road or public nuisance offences.
