In Case You Weren’t Already Fully Aware, Sports Agents Live In A Different World From You And Me

If you were the GM of a major league ballclub and you were looking for catcher on the free agent market, what’s the best gauge for determining proper market value? Stop. No. Shh. Whatever you said was wrong. It’s the number of no-hitters they’ve caught over the span of their career. From this article:

Agent Scott Boras told reporters that New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada’s four-year, $52.4 million deal, which was agreed to last offseason, will serve as a benchmark for any team looking to land Varitek. It’s probably representative, age-wise,” Boras said, “and it’s also representative of what a player on a winning team (is worth). You’re not going to have many catchers who have the performance levels and a 60 percent winning percentage on a franchise and have won two world championships and caught four no-hitters. The idea of it is that there just aren’t many in the marketplace that can lead a club like Jason Varitek and that’s going to be his value.

Here are Varitek’s numbers from last season: .220/.313/.359, 13 HR, 43 RBI.

And here are Posada’s from two seasons ago: .338/.426/.543, 20 HR, 90 RBI.

Fuck, is Yogi Berra’s agent still alive? Wait, is Yogi still alive? Dude caught a perfect game in the World Series and won something like 14 MVPs and he’s pushing insurance and playing second fiddle to a talking duck? Such injustice.
