ESPN's Latest Atrocity: Titletown

Hot off their stirring “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” competition, ESPN has another terrible idea. If you’ve been watching SportsCenter the last couple of mornings, you have probably noticed their newest spot, Titletown, where different sports related towns vie for the coveted title with arguments from famous figures (Roy Williams for Chapel Hill, Tommy Lasorda for LA) about why their town should be deemed TitleTown, USA. Not only is the idea staggeringly unoriginal, but completely disorganized as well. Check out the list of candidates. How are the cities slightly-more-populated-than-average towns like Green Bay, Chapel Hill and Knoxville supposed to compete with New York, LA and Chicago? Shouldn’t there be some kind of bracket system here? Maybe college towns matched up against each other. Perhaps in another towns with at least three professional sports teams could go head to head. Then this way I don’t have to hear Roy Williams explain how two basketball wins and a couple of women’s soccer titles compare to UCLA’s 11 basketball championships. Personally, I think Losertown would make for much more compelling television. Actually, scratch that, Philadelphia wins in a landslide.
