As detailed in the vastly underappreciated Not Another Teen Movie, nothing ties a climactic scene in a movie together like a perfectly timed slow clap. So here for your viewing pleasure, are the five best sports movie slow clap scenes of all-time. (I’ve put the time in which the slow clap occurs in each video in parentheses.)
5. Cool Runnings (3:19).
Am I the only one who remembers how ubiquitous this movie was when it came out?
4. Against The Ropes (7:51).
Unfortunately, the beginning of the slow clap is cut off a bit here, but one key element is included. The film’s antagonist, Tony Shalhoub, begrudgingly coming around with a little encouragement and joining in on the applause.
3. Can’t Buy Me Love (4:39).
Although theoretically not a sports movie, Patrick Dempsey delivers his slow clap inducing speech to the a member of the baseball team and the clap itself is started by Eric Bruskotter, who later would go on to play Rube Baker in Major League 2. Close enough.
2. Hoosiers (1:13).
I just watched this scene again and I have no doubt that my productivity here at work will triple today because of that. But considering that I am currently blogging and watching scenes from 20 year old movies on YouTube, that’s probably not saying much.
1. Lucas (2:47).
Simply put, the slow clap from Lucas is the standard for what all slow claps, sports movie or other wise, should be measured by.
