June 16, 2008. What an absolutely glorious day. Bill Bavasi is
no longer the general manager of the Seattle Mariners.
Clearly I’m excited.
Vice president/associate GM Lee Pelekoudas will serve as the interim GM for now. Whether he assumes the position full time or they hire someone else, as a favor I’ll compile a list of things not to do if you’d like to retain the title of Mariners GM.
Avoid the following:
Signing Richie Sexson for 4yrs/$50M.
Signing Adrian Beltre for 5yrs/$65M after what was clearly the greatest contract year performance in the history or contracts or performances.
Signing Jarrod Washburn for 4yrs/$37M, Carlos Silva for 4yrs/$48M, Jeff Weaver for anything other than throwing batting practice.
Bringing in Scott Spiezio to hit .215 in 2004, then having Mariners’ fans realize that we took that .215 for granted when he hit .064 the next season in 29 games before he was released.
But wait, there’s also some trade strategies to avoid:
Dealing Freddy Garcia for Jeremy Reed, Miguel Olivo and Mike Morse.
Sending Carlos Guillen to Detroit for Ramon Santiago.
Holding onto Rafael Soriano for the longest time while he was at his highest value, letting him get injured and then dealing him to the Braves for one year of Horacio Ramirez.
Randy Winn for Jesse Foppert didn’t work out too well either.
(This spot reserved for future use for the Erik Bedard trade.)
I’m in a good mood. I may go out and adopt a three legged dog or make it rain Washingtons on a homeless man when I get off from work. Who knows. Now if only a certain mustached former linebacker turned tv analyst turned lousy GM would be relieved of his duties….

Let us not forget…
How about Rich Aurilla who got 3.5 mil for 73 games in 2004…
Or Carl Everett, signed in January 2006, released July 2006, 3.4 mil (that’s a pretty good 6 months!)
The blockbuster Aron Sele sining of 2005.
Pokey Resse who earned 900 grand for NOT DOING ANYTHING.
Chris Reitsma. Nuff said…
There were also other glamour signings like Matt Lawton, Sean Burroughs……
All I have to say is: If trading Julio Mateo for Jesus Merchan is probably the best thing he’s done in his tenure, it is not a particularly fabulous reign…
Farewell my large shining craniumed friend. You will be missed.

Haha, Sean Burroughs, wow, there are just so many terrible moves here.
The best move he probably made was signing Jose Guillen to a one year deal. But he performed too well to be retained for the next season.

And Guillen seemed to fire up the team in the clubhouse, too. An absolute no-no.
I’m still reeling from how he ran Carlos Guillen out of town. First he tried to replace him with Omar Vizquel (who didn’t pass his physical), and then with Aurilla who was gone midway through…. I think he must’ve been banging Carlos’ mother or something and was trying to avoid a confrontation….

Did you see the parting shots Bavasi took at the M’s? He basically ripped apart the team that he alone assembled. Quality entertainment.

That’s the thing… Over the past three or four weeks, he’s done a ton of finger pointing, and apparently, he is the only one who doesn’t truly understand the irony of pointing his finger at all of the players that he singlehandedly overpaid for.
