Charles Rogers, Montreal Alouette?

Charles Rogers

A quote from Alouette GM Jim Popp from this article:

“I would say there’s about an 80-20 chance of him being at training camp, coming in and competing for a job. It’s not completed yet, but he can come in as a CFL rookie and we’ll make an assessment of him, where he’s at in his career and his life.”

Allow me. Rogers was the second pick in the 2003 draft, selected between Carson Palmer and Andre Johnson and now five years later he’s in fucking Canada competing with Danny Desriveaux, the bilingual finance major, for a roster spot. He’s a bad workout away from being locked down by a UPS truck driver on an upcoming episode of Pros vs. Joes. That’s where Rogers is in his life. Being a CFL GM should not be this difficult or painstaking. Just throw a whole bunch of Robbie Bordens at freshly washed up NFL stars and watch the Grey Cups roll in. Sacrebleu!

Is there a gayer name in all of sports than the Alouettes?

  • 2 Roger Dorn // May 9, 2008 at 11:22 am

Rotoworld claims Rogers was last clocked running a 4.8-4.9 40, which is somewhere between Dorn and ShakespeareD’s official times. Both of us are trilingual bartender poets.

I think Rogers drank the death spasm a few years back.

In all honesty Dorn, it should not have taken you nearly seven months to post a Cocktail video somewhere on here.

Don’t tell me what to do.

If you’re not going to listen to me than will you at least listen to Lance Henriksen?

    That’s not true about Reno.

Shakes, the Saskatoon Cockgobblers is probably a slightly gayer team name than Alouettes. Slightly.

I’m always surprise the lack of knowledge in the US of the Canadian football league. You truly think it would be easy for Charles Rogers. How naïve can you be! If he his not prepare, he will not make it. Ask Quincy Jones (he couldn’t be the forth QB of the Montreal Alouettes) something with Mike McMahon. Tell Mr Rogers to call Ricky Williams he did’t have it easy in Canada too.

First off, let me just say, great use of unnecessary umlauts in the word naïve. I’ll take that as proof you’re actually from Canada.

Show me where in that article that I said it would be easy for Charles Rogers in the CFL. The overall theme of this post was that in five years, Rogers went from can’t miss NFL prospect to battling for a roster spot with a bunch of no names who weren’t any where as nearly talented as he was in college. I do fully believe that someone in NFL shape like Shaun Alexander would absolutely dominate the CFL.

Case in point, Ricky Williams. He spent a year out of football, smoking pot, and traveling the world, in search of the finest yoga classes money could buy. In his first game back with Toronto, he ran for 97 yards on 18 carries. In 11 games he ran for 526 yds on 109 carries (4.83 YPC) and amassed another 127 yds on 19 catches. It wasn’t like he struggled by any means.

And I wholeheartedly agree 100% that legendary R&B producer Quincy Jones would struggle mightily as a CFL QB. Quincy Carter too.

Ricky Williams admit the cfl’s game was harder then he though. An average of 5 yards is a minimum in the CFL. Ricky as his best game with the weakest teems. This is a mistake I often hear, a player as a great shape so it should be good. In the CFL talent is first, size is in second.

Thanks CFL man for forcing me to look up CFL stats.

Yes, a lot of the top runners from last year had average YPC of 5+, but my point is, Ricky Williams wasn’t in top football shape and came in and picked up 4.8 YPC. I don’t think the CFL is anywhere near the XFL as far as talent and competition, but it’s nowhere near the NFL either. There’s a reason why Jarrett Payton and John Avery are amongst the rushing leaders.

Obviously, I’m not as familiar with the CFL as you are, but is there not much emphasis on the running game? The fourth leading rusher in the entire league had only 866 yards. Just curious.

    Yds avg
    J. Smith 1,510 5.4
    C. Roberts 1,379 5.3
    J. Reynolds 1231 5.8
    W. Gates 866 5.7

Jarrett Payton may loose his job this year, he his not fast enough and John Avery had a bad year may not return with his team this year. CFL is a passing game. You are juging the numbers because you compare with the NFL. CFL it’s a different football. Each year formers NFL players do not make a CFL team. As you said: « Obviously, I’m not as familiar with the CFL» so it’s had to compare XFL or the NFL with the CFL. The came is not the same, the field is not the same and the rules are not the same.

Many love Canadian football’s fast pace, with only three downs, no fair catch and a 20-second time limit to put the ball in play and the size of the field. The multiple guys in motion allowed running up field before the snap. This makes the game wild and crazy, a lot of passing and big plays. This means different types of players. Small talent players have they places in Canada because of the size of the field. A large place is made for improvisation. QB’s need to learn to improvise otherwise they don’t make it.

Interesting, it sounds somewhat similar to the arena league but with a much larger field. I wish I could get some games down here.

Go to CFL.ca under Schedule. The 2008 US broadcast Schedule will come soon.

    Where are you from?

  • 15 Harvey Bars // May 21, 2008 at 1:36 pm

    San Diego.

  • 16 Harvey Bars // May 21, 2008 at 1:37 pm

How are the Calgary Stampeders? I think that’s who I’m giving my allegiance to.

Last year they had a good exiting team, lots of offence.
