Here is a fantastic London Times article on Ricky Hatton. Hatton is already one of the more popular English fighters in history. Sure, there have been great fighters like Lennox Lewis and crappy fighters like Frank Bruno, but none have seemed to move the populace quite like Hatton. Hatton grew up working class in Manchester’s Hattersly estate. The area is better known for murder than boxing. The Moors murders occurred there in the 1960’s. Hatton went to school with the son of Dr. Harold Shipman, the most prolific serial killer in world history.
All in all, Hatton seems to be your average working class guy. The article notes that he has to work twice as hard in fight preparation due to his between fight diet of Guinness, curry and chips. He still hangs out with all of his school friends and is polite and respectful. I was rooting for Hatton from the beginning, but the more you get to know about him, the more you like him. This is a true Balboa-Creed match and hopefully, the fight is just as good as in the movies.
